Authorities in Texas are searching for the operator of a personal watercraft (PWC) who fled the scene after fatally striking a teenage kayaker over the weekend.

The Grapevine Police Department said Ava Moore, 18, was kayaking at Grapevine Lake, about 20 miles northwest of Dallas, on Sunday evening when she was struck by a PWC with two occupants. Moore was transported to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police said the passenger of the PWC stayed at the scene to be interviewed by first responders, but the operator fled with an unknown man. The pair allegedly struck a vehicle while fleeing the area.

Local police are investigating the vehicular hit and run while Texas Game Wardens are investigating the water fatality.

Police and Texas Game Wardens released a photo of the woman who was operating the PWC, and investigators are also searching for the man who drove the getaway vehicle.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to email Grapevine Police detectives at [email protected].
