NASA astronaut Jonny Kim has no beef with the slim pickings available to him in outer space — because he has found a way to get his burger fix!
The U.S. Navy lieutenant commander — who is hunkered down at the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a Roscosmos Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft — posted his latest recipe on social media, and let’s just say it’s not everyone’s cup of tea: a rough and ready cheeseburger floating in zero gravity.
In the post, Jonny reveals that his take on a ranger burger was cobbled together from “beef steak, wheat snack bread, cheese spread as both topping and glue, potatoes au gratin layered in the middle, and a generous slather of gochujang red pepper paste from a care package on the SpX-32 Cargo Dragon.”
Although photos reveal a meat sandwich that looks less than stellar, Kim’s followers were largely impressed with his makeshift meal.
“It’s noteworthy because instead of the standard tortilla, which is usually used in place of bread on the ISS to avoid floating crumbs his burger actually uses ‘wheat snack bread,’ which may be a novel form of orbital baked good,” wrote one follower.
“If you’ve lived on MREs [Meals, Ready-to-Eat], you’ve probably tried some creative field recipes,” Jonny wrote in his post. “I miss cooking for my family, but this hits the spot in its own way.”
It’s the trip of a lifetime for the American, who NASA said in a press release is on his first spaceflight, alongside two cosmonauts, to “conduct scientific investigations and technology demonstrations to help preparethe crew for future space missions and provide benefits to people on Earth.”
