Bryan Kohberger will spend the rest of his life behind bars after pleading guilty to the brutal murders of Ethan Chapin, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20, Madison Mogen, 21, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21.
In the wake of his sentencing hearing, newly released police reports claim that his attacks on Kernodle and Goncalves were so violent that one of their surviving roommates, Dylan Mortensen, initially misidentified their bodies to police.
“I was unable to comprehend exactly what I was looking at while trying to discern the nature of the injuries,” one police officer said of the murder scene, per the Idaho Statesman.
Goncalves’ face was left so “disfigured” by Kohberger, 30, according to a report by Officer Corbin Smith, while Kernodle was stabbed more than 50 times and covered in “defensive wounds,” implying that she fought back. Sgt. Shaine Gunderson also noted that “it was obvious an intense struggle had occurred” between Kernodle and Kohberger before she died.
Chapin died from a “fatal injury was from a stab wound under his left clavicle which severed his subclavian vein and subclavian artery, and also his jugular vein was severed,” according to the released coroner’s report.
Mogen’s cause of death was listed as laceration to her liver and left lung.
Prior to sentencing, Kohberger listened to victim impact statements from family and friends – including Mortensen.
“What happened that night changed everything. Because of him, four beautiful, genuine, compassionate people were taken from this world for no reason,” she said in court on July 23.
“What he did shattered me in places I didn’t know could break,” she continued. “I should have been figuring out who I was. I should have been having the college experience and starting to establish my future. Instead, I was forced to learn how to survive the unimaginable.”
Their other roommate, Beth Funke, also revealed the incident left her haunted with survivor’s guilt.
“I hated and still hate that they’re gone, but for some reason, I am still here and I got to live,” her statement read by a friend said. “Why me? Why did I get to live, and not them?”
Goncalves’ sister, Alivea, took the opportunity to rip into Bryan for killing her sister.
“Let me be very clear: Don’t ever try to convince yourself you matter just because someone finally said your name out loud,” she said. “I see through you.”
“You want the truth? Here’s the one you’ll hate the most. If you hadn’t attacked them in their sleep, in the middle of the night, like a pedophile, Kaylee would’ve kicked your f**king ass,” she added, according to CNN.
Bryan was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences, plus an additional 10 years for felony burglary.
